B.A. Mathematics

Overview

DEVELOPING WISDOM. ESTABLISHING CONVICTIONS. PRODUCING LEADERS.

Mathematics is the way God thinks about numbers. It works and applies to this world because God’s mind upholds this world. That’s why math is beautiful — most students don’t view it that way; they don’t see it as applicable.

With the nearly ubiquitous influence of technology, the study of mathematics is crucial for both logical thinking and the preparation for most vocations and career paths. From investment banking to data science, engineering to teaching, software engineering, economics, and more, STEM careers are in rapid growth and high demand. Our small class sizes are optimal for detailed, personal, and focused training in each area. Students majoring in Mathematics at TMU are challenged and strengthened incalculably in their studies to go into any path and thrive.

Mathematics majors can also pursue the California Teaching Credential. Credentials are two-semester program programs that enable students to become teachers who integrate faith into teaching and include structured fieldwork and student teaching.

Emphases

B.A. in Mathematics degrees are accredited 4-year undergraduate degree programs offered on-campus in Santa Clarita. Four emphases are offered. To graduate, students complete 40 units of General Education (GE), 21 of Bible, 24 major core courses, and 24-26 emphasis/elective classes. Some GE and Bible units may be taken through TMU Online. Students may also compile required classes in the TMU IBEX Israel Semester or in the TMU Italy Summer program.

Discrete Mathematics

MA253

This course is a study of discrete structures commonly used in computer science and mathematics, including topics from sets and relations, permutations and combinations, graphs and trees, induction, recursion, and Boolean Algebras.

Introduction to Applied Mathematics

MA463

This course is a broad and systematic introduction to Applied Mathematics, providing a general framework for equilibrium problems encountered in applied mathematics and engineering. It covers some fundamental topics in applied linear algebra, ordinary and partial differential equations, Fourier analysis, and optimization (both continuous and discrete). The Matlab scientific computing environment and language will be used to illustrate the concepts and techniques introduced and to solve problems having no analytical solutions.

Minors in addition to Biblical Studies

15-27 Units

Most students will complete a minor in Biblical Studies by default by completing the 24 units in their GE classes and upper-division requirements across 4 years at TMU. In addition to their major, students can also complete a minor in any of these programs by completing the required 15-27 units, depending on the minor: Accounting, Biblical Studies, Biology, Business Administration, Communication, Computer Science, Education, English, History, Global Studies, Kinesiology & Physical Education, Mathematics, Music, and/or Political Studies.

Rooted in an unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ and the inerrant Word of God, our world-class faculty and dedicated administration prepare each student's heart and mind for a life of eternal influence.
