Bio

Bassoonist Maciej Flis is an active freelance performer and teacher in the Los Angeles area. He plays principal bassoon with many symphony and chamber orchestras, among them, Golden State Pops Orchestra, Redlands Symphony, New West Symphony, Jacaranda, Bakersfield Symphony, LA Korean Philharmonic, Long Beach Opera and Angeles Chorale. Since 2005 he has been a principal bassoonist of the Bard Conductors Institute Orchestra in New York. As a recording artist, Maciej performs on films, television and video games. He has taken part in numerous music festivals in the United States, Mexico and Europe. He is fortunate to have collaborated with some of the world’s famous artists and musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Burt Bacharach, Yundi Li, Kent Nagano, Carl St. Clair, John Williams, Alan Silvestri, John Waltz, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Larry Livingston, Monica Mancini and Charles Fox. Many of his performances have been featured on the Los Angeles classical radio stations, K-Mozart and KUSC. Maciej was featured soloist with the CalArts Orchestra and the Orange County Symphony in the “Five Sacred Trees” Concerto for Bassoon by John Williams.

Maciej thrives in the chamber music environment, and has appeared locally as part of the South Bay Chamber Music, Symbiosis, Beverly Hills International Music Festival series, and internationally with his woodwind quintet Midnight Winds on a multi-city concert tour of Poland. The Midnight Winds quintet was also featured in the Schneider Concert Series in New York, Chamber Music Sedona, LACMA’s Sundays Live, Paderewski Festival, an educational outreach residency through Orchestras of Pasadena. In 2010, the ensemble recorded and premiered a new commission by Emmy award-winning composer Steve Cohn, a work written for the ensemble. The Midnight Winds was back in the studio to record for a retrospective of David Rosenboom’s works, released on New World Records. Today, the Midnight Winds maintain a strong relationship with the USC Polish Music Center, where they frequently collaborate with international artists and composers.

Maciej’s nonmusical passions include: aviation, photography and travel.
